Bethesda is an unincorporated, census designated place in the south part of Montgomery County, Maryland, and just to the northwest of Washington DC. The town gets its name from the local Bethesda Presbyterian Church. This church was first constructed in 1820 and then rebuilt in 1850. The church adopted the name Bethesda after the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. Beth hesda is Aramaic for house of mercy. The town of Bethesda is known for being one of the most rich and highly educated towns in the entire United States. Bethesda was ranked as the number one most educated small town according to Forbes list of the top ones in America. The town was also ranked as number eleven on CNNMoney.com’s list of the highest income earning towns in America. Furthermore, Forbes magazine listed Bethesda as the second most livable city in the United States.

There are many important institutions that can be found in the town of Bethesda. For example, one can find the National Institute of Health Campus, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. Also in Bethesda is the National Naval Medical Center, sometimes referred to as the Bethesda Naval Hospital. This hospital is traditionally the location for the president’s annual check up. Next to the Bethesda Naval Hospital is the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

In the town of Bethesda there are many coffee shops, restaurants, trendy clothing stores, and specialty shops. Many of these are very modern and were recently constructed in 2008 as part of the newly improved Bethesda Lane. Located at Bethesda Row, this new complex cost a whopping 77 million dollars and covers a 44,000 square foot area. This property was developed by the Federal Realty Investment Trust of Rockville. The project included 16 retail properties along its strip by the corner of Arlington Road and Bethesda Avenue. The project also provided for the “Upstairs at Bethesda Row,” 180 quality apartments with rents that range anywhere form 2,000 to 4,000 dollars each month. The area now features three brand new restaurants such as the Redwood Restaurant and Wine Bar, as well as a Giant Food grocery store and Marvelous Market.

Bethesda is also well known for being the traditional location for the AT&T National and Tiger Woods’ Golf Tournament. One can also find in Bethesda the Burning Tree Club, the Bethesda Community Baseball Club, and the Bethesda Country Club. In addition Bethesda is the home of men’s softball team, the Swamp Donkeys.
