Bowie Real Estate Information

Bowie is an incorporated city found in Prince George’s County in the US state of Maryland. The city is home to a population of over 50,000 residents making it the biggest municipality in the county. Bowie is also the fifth most populated city in the entire state of Maryland, although at one point it was nothing more than a small railroad stop. The city first sprang into existence when the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Company resolved to construct a rail line that reached form Baltimore City to the southern areas of Maryland. The properties around the rail stop were originally named Huntington City. However, the city was renamed in 1880 to Bowie after Oden Bowie, the president of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Company at that time.

The city of Bowie covers a total area of 16.1 square miles. It is bordered on the south by Greater Upper Marlboro; on the southwest by Kettering, Mitchellville, and Woodmore; on the northwest by Glenn Dale; on the northeast by Crofton; and on the east by Davidsonville.

The Huntington Railroad Museum can be found in Bowie and is a testament to the city’s efforts to preserve its history as a rail town. The museum features several exhibits including displays set up in the restored buildings of the old railroad station. The city of Bowie also features the Bowie Building Association building. This structure is used as a welcome center to visitors of Bowie and it helps educate them about the city’s long history. The small, brick building was first constructed around 1930 to house the original Bowie Building Association, a company that greatly helped in the city’s early development.

Although Bowie started as nothing more than a small railroad stop and agricultural town, it has recently become one of the most rapidly expanding cities in Maryland. The city covers an area of about 16 square miles and has just about 2,000 acres of real estate set aside for parks. The city contains a total of 72 baseball fields, an ice-skating arena, 3 community centers, and a golf course. There is also a recently constructed senior citizens center and community gymnasium. One can also find the Bowie Town Center, the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts, a theatrical playhouse, and 3 different museums. The city of Bowie is also the home of the Bowie Baysox, a AA professional baseball team. The Baysox are affiliated with the major league Baltimore Orioles and they play all their home games at Prince George’s Stadium.
